in northeast wisconsin that swung huge for obama in 2008 and then swung violently back for the republicans in the gubernatorial races of 2010. there were countiss that president obama one by ten points and scott walker in june won by 20 points. these more rural counties are competitive, ticket splitters and those are going to be counties to watch in central wisconsin come election day. host: how does early voting factor in? guest: we don't have the same tradition. it's been growing but not at the same level. it's known as absentee voting. the window for early voting is narrower now and it's harder to track in wisconsin because we don't have registration by party so if you're trying to figure out which side is winning the early vote, it's more difficult. so i don't think we can say with confidence who has the advantage in the early voting in wisconsin. it will be significant but it won't be at the level like states like colorado. host: are voters required to show i.d.? guest: a law was passed to do that but it's held up in court so they will not be required to show photo i.d. in this electi

. of course, this is president obama's firewall. polls show him leading there. no republican has won the presidency without holding on to ohio. president obama knows that he really needs to win the state if he is to get those 270 electoral votes. so president obama really trying to make up for lost time, tamron, with some of these key swing state voters. as you know, he spent the past three days managing the federal response to sandy. that allowed him to look presidential, of course, but he had to cancel a number of campaign events including in wisconsin. so earlier today in wisconsin, he talked about that issue of romney painting himself as the candidate of change. he basically said that's not the case. he said, look, romney can't be trusted. he's not the candidate of change. is he a candidate who essentially espouses the same policies as george w. bush which president obama has argued is exactly what got the country into the financial mess that it was in during the recession. tamron. >> kristen, speaking of change, the president has modified his stump speech according to david axel

a tremendous ground operation here. the obama campaign has something like 54 offices here and the republicans have something like 22 offices here. we have a tremendous amount of energy going into the ground operation. there is a tremendous amount of surrogates coming in almost every day like governors and celebrities and other people. there is a tremendous intensity of campaigning here just not the principles. host: you mentioned governor romney and his meeting with billy graham. talk to was more about that. does dr. graham, maybe his family members and sun, are they taking an active role in the romney campaign? are they just giving their blessing to say that for evangelicals and people of faith in north carolina that it is ok to go ahead and support a mormon? guest: it is very close to an endorsement. you might as well call it an endorsement. he did not say to vote for him but it was close to it. i don't think you can underestimate the importance of billy graham giving his blessing to a candidate because he is a widely respected figure in north carolina. north carolina is part of the bible b

're democrat, republican or independent. >> reporter: president obama seemed energized and confident today. he actually did a little jig at hiss his last top here in lima, ohio. obama campaign officials are talking up their early voting program, years in the making. with republicans more reliable election day voters, the argument goes, democrats have built up a bank of early votes, ones that make winning those battleground states a tougher challenge for romney. obama campaign officials argue polls of early voters in battleground states suggest their bank of obama votes means romney will have to win on election day well more than half the votes in key states to win. but the president is not relying solely on early voting or even on this new rekindled bipartisan pitch. in this state alone, diane, president obama and his allies have run 16,000 more ads than romney and his allies. and if that's not enough for you, on monday, president obama will be back here in ohio with bruce springsteen. diane? >> okay, thank you, jake. >>> and also tonight, the latest in our brand new daily abc news/"washington

from the republican nominee, but i think in new mexico and michigan he is taking votes away from obama. if you could give me some insight into what you think will happen there. guest: that is a good question because we tend to oversimplified about independent and third-party candidates. we need to remember first of all some people turn out to vote for them that would not make a choice between the two major party candidates. maybe they would show up and vote for a member of congress or the local sheriff, i don't know. but it is not as though all of those votes are taken from a major party candidate. that is simply not true. having said that, it is true some votes are taken from major party candidates. if you only have a choice of a democrat or republican, some would make a choice. libertarians in general take a few more votes from republicans than democrats. maybe more than a few votes. it depends on the state and the race and the circumstances. gary johnson, i think, will take more votes from mitt romney than barack obama but i do not think it will make a difference in any state unless

. unemployment is higher today than when barack obama took office. >> the republican presidential nominee also says voters will decide next tuesday between what he calls stagnation, and prosperity. >>> president obama is campaigning in in ohio. he says the jokes report shows a pattern -- jobs report shows a pattern of progress. >> our businesses have created nearly 5.5 million new jobs, and the companies hired more workers in october than any time in the last 8 month. >> the president said despite another month of job growth, there is still more work to do. and only on 2 tonight, a last look at california voters sentiment towards the presidential race. what is motivating them to vote for or against the candidate, and how the vice presidential picks are impacting votes. >>> we talk a lot about crime in oakland, but oakland is the scene of a huge party on the first friday of every month. it's a party that is drawing thousands of people from all over. we are in the uptown area, and tells us this party just keeps getting bigger every month. >> reporter: that's right. first friday begins in an hour

himself. he won the republican nomination in affluent areas and shown himself to be more articulate than president obama, the supposedly great orator. people in affluent suburbs like people who are articulate, who use words good, as i like to put it, and that is an advantage that mitt romney has and that he demonstrated to great effect there, and i think -- i wrote earlier in the washington examiner that romney was a kin dread spirit to many aflute people. politically awkward on some occasion. he is able to make a sharp point but is polite and is conservative on the cultural issues. has an attitude that reminds me of the inscription on the tombstone of an english woman which noted she was religious without enthusiasm. >> well, what's this democratic argument you're hearing now, that says, okay, all of that might be true, but republicans have no chance at michigan and pennsylvania anyway. and, look, in ohio, which the republicans have to win, romney has to win, where barack obama is still leading, still leading wisconsin and iowa and nevada. that is his fire wall, and unless romney can br

. if obama wins re-election, obama is going to be negotiating with probably a republican house and with probably a democratic-controlled senate but a senate where there will be more than 40 republicans who could full filibuster. now if murdoch wins then every republican in the united states senate will be terrified of a primary from a murdoch type, they won't do a thing to compromise with the president. but if murdoch loses then a lot of republicans in the united states senate are going to say well, that kind of tea party politics doesn't work. i can repel such a challenge and that gives them a little bit more room to maneuver and compromise with the president. i think that's really the most important senate race. >> eliot: michael, i think that is exquisitely important analysis and exactly right. which way the republican party leans after next tuesday does it determine it needs to cut back to the middle and negotiate? or does it feel that the tea party is exactly the most important question of how congress acts and whether or not the president gets things done over the next co
